Modern terra sigillata is made by resting a batch of clay and siphoning off the topmost layers containing the finest clay particles. Terra sigillata is then brushed in thin layers onto unfired dry ware. The ware is then burnished with a soft cloth, creating a silky smooth and beautiful surface without the use of any glaze or polish. Designed to act as an evaporative cooler, making use of an ancient and eco-friendly method of cooling: Capillary action causes water to evaporate through the pores of clay, keeping the liquid inside cooler than the outside temperature. The finer pores created by our process allows for consistent perspiration without leakage. This pitcher might have been similar to a high-end water vessel used in an affluent Roman domus! Also a great piece of home decor. Can also be used as a wine decanter, we recommend to let your wine sit for at least 30 minutes to ensure complete aeration! As unglazed terracotta is porous, cleaning agents may be absorbed during washing. Please use only water and natural cleaning agents for cleaning.
